Terminalia arjuna is a huge tree grows wild in many regions of South Asia and particularly in North India. The tree is 20-25 m tall. Leaves are green with pale yellow flowers, appears during September and November. The use of Terminalia Arjuna has been introduced by Vagbhata during 7th century CE. In Ayurveda, Terminalia arjuna has been used for the treatment of hemorrhages, ulcers, wounds and as cardiotonic.

Terminalia arjuna: Health benefits

  • Hypolipidemic agent: The bark extract of Terminalia Arjuna shows ‘hypolipidemic activity’ that attributes to the inhibition of oxidative stress. The presence of Arjunic acid inhibits HMG- CoA reductase activity, which lowers the elevated levels of LDL cholesterol and can slow the progression of ‘atherosclerotic lesions’.


  • Cardioprotactive activity: The bark of Terminalia arjuna is rich in alkaloids, glycosides, saponins and glycosides. These active compounds are known for their cardio protective activity. The comprehensive and pharmacological studies of indigenous tree has led into the large scale commercial use as a cardio protective/curative drug.
  • Hypotensive: Herbal extract of Terminalia arjuna is diuretic and hypolipidemic, due to these properties, it acts against hypertension.


  • Cardiac stimulant: Terminalia arjuna strengthens the cardiac muscles and maintain heart functioning properly.


  • Herbal extract of Terminalia arjuna is astringent and hemostatic, prostaglandin enhancing and coronary modulation properties.
